What the watermark tool does

A watermark in Khallas is one line of text you type, such as Confidential, Draft, your organisation's name, or what the copy is for, drawn across the middle of every page in dark translucent ink. You control three things, because those three are what actually change how the sheet looks: the opacity, the size of the mark as a share of the page width, and whether it is tilted or straight. A fourth option adds a small line under the mark carrying today's written-out Hijri date in the Umm al-Qura calendar.

The mark is drawn by your browser's own text engine and then merged into the page as a transparent layer, which is what makes Arabic come out connected and correctly shaped, unlike many tools that break Arabic letters apart. All of it runs on your device: the file is never uploaded and never passes through us, so the contract or bank statement you stamp Confidential never leaves the browser.

Before you press the button you see the page in front of you with the mark on it exactly as it will print, and you can step through the pages to check where it lands on each one. Any change to opacity, size or tilt shows on the sheet in the same moment, because the preview and the finished file draw the mark the same way.

When you need a watermark on a PDF

The most common use in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf is a copy of an ID, an iqama or a passport handed to a real-estate office, a car rental company or an employer: a line written across the image states what the copy is for, such as For the lease contract only, so the same scan cannot be reused for anything else. Proposals and studies sent out before approval are stamped Draft so nobody circulates them as final.

In everyday work, internal memos and financial reports are stamped Confidential before they go around, engineering and consulting offices stamp their name across drawings and proposals, and a student writes their name and university number on the summaries they share with classmates. In all of these the point is a visible mark on the sheet itself, not a line in the file's properties.

What opacity and size to choose

The opacity slider runs from five per cent to fifty and starts at fifteen. Ten to twenty is enough for a document read on screen: the mark is legible and does not hide the lines under it. Push it to thirty or more if the file will be printed or photocopied, because printing and copying lighten the mark by a step or two.

Size has three steps, each a share of the page width: small is about half the width and suits a long mark such as a whole sentence, medium is about two thirds and is the default, and large nearly fills the width and suits a single short word. Tilt is one fixed angle you turn on or off, chosen because it reads well in both Arabic and English text.

How to add a watermark to a PDF, step by step

  1. Open the watermark page and drop a PDF into the tray, or tap it to pick the file from your device or from the Files app on a phone.

  2. Type the watermark text in the field, in Arabic or English, such as Confidential, Draft, or a line saying what the copy is for. The mark appears on the page as you type.

  3. Move the opacity slider until the mark is legible without hiding the text, then pick one of the three sizes and decide whether to keep the tilt on.

  4. Turn on the Hijri date option if you want a line under the mark with today's date in the Umm al-Qura calendar, and step through the pages to check the mark does not clash with a particular page.

  5. Press the add watermark button, then download the file and open it to check before you send it, or share it straight from the share row under the result.

Limits to know about

  • The mark goes on every page in the file, and specific pages cannot be picked. To stamp part of a file, split it with the split PDF tool, watermark the part you want, then merge it back.
  • The position is fixed at the middle of the page, and the tilt is one angle you turn on or off. There is no option to change the angle or to place the mark in a header or a corner.
  • There is one dark ink colour and no colour list. The opacity slider alone is what makes the mark lighter or heavier.
  • The text is a single line, plus the Hijri date line if you turn it on. This tool does not stamp a logo or an image: to place an office logo, use the edit PDF tool and add a PNG with a transparent background.
  • The mark is merged into the page as an image, so it is not text you can select or search inside the file, and it cannot be lifted off again after saving. Keep your original copy before you stamp.
  • A password-protected file will not open for stamping. Unlock it first with the unlock PDF tool and the current password, then protect it again afterwards if you need to.
  • You can drop more than one file in a run and each takes the same mark, up to 3 files in one run. The ceiling is technical, not commercial: every file is unpacked and rebuilt inside your browser. Drop more and a note keeps the first files with one press so the rest go in a second run.

Common problems and fixes

The watermark hides the text under it

Drop the opacity slider to ten or fifteen per cent, and pick the small size if it is still heavy. The preview is right there, so adjust until you can read the lines under the mark clearly before you run.

The watermark is too faint once printed

Printing and photocopying lighten the mark, so raise the opacity to thirty per cent or more and choose the medium or large size, then print one page as a test before printing the whole file.

I only want the cover page watermarked

Split the file into the cover and the remaining pages with the split PDF tool, stamp the cover on its own, then merge the two parts back in the same order with the merge PDF tool.

I want a company logo instead of text

Use the edit PDF tool and add the logo as a PNG with a transparent background, then drag it into place and resize it from the corner. The watermark tool here is text only.

The file is password protected

Open the unlock PDF tool, enter the current password, stamp the unlocked file, then protect it again with the protect PDF tool if it is going outside your device.

The mark is a different size on different pages

The size is a share of the page width, so a landscape or larger page takes a wider mark to keep the same proportion. If that bothers you, unify the page sizes first with the unify page sizes tool.

Frequently asked questions

Do I see the watermark before I download?

Yes. As soon as you drop the file the page appears with the mark on it exactly as it will print: the text you typed, at the opacity, size and tilt you chose. Every change to the options lands on the sheet straight away, and you can step through the pages to see the mark over each one before you press add watermark.

What opacity should I use for a watermark?

10% to 20% is enough for a document read on screen: the mark is legible without covering the text. Go to 30% or more if the file will be printed or photocopied, because printing lightens it. The slider runs from 5% to 50% and starts at 15%, and the preview is right there, so move it until it looks the way you want it.

Do Arabic letters connect properly in the watermark?

Yes. The mark is drawn by your browser's own text engine and then merged into the page, so Arabic comes out connected and shaped exactly as you see it on screen, and that includes the Hijri date line if you turn it on, because the month name needs the same shaping. Many foreign tools break Arabic apart because they draw the text with a font inside the file and do no shaping at all.

Can I watermark specific pages only?

The watermark is applied to every page in the file, and there is no option to pick particular pages. To stamp part of a file, open the split PDF tool and pull the pages you want into their own file, watermark that file, then merge it back with the rest in the same order using the merge PDF tool. That is the usual way to stamp only a cover page with the word Draft.

Can a watermark be removed from a PDF later?

Not with one press. The mark is merged into the page content as a transparent image and becomes part of it, so there is no button that returns the file to what it was before stamping. Keep your original copy, and stamp again from that original if you need different wording or a different opacity. Staying put on the copy you hand over is rather the point of a watermark.

What does the Hijri date option do?

It adds a small line under the mark with today's written-out Hijri date in the Umm al-Qura calendar, drawn by your browser's text engine so the Arabic month name comes out connected. The date is read from your device's clock, so a wrong device date produces a wrong stamp. It suits copies that need to show the day they were handed over.

Can I use a logo or an image as the watermark?

Not in this tool: the mark here is text only, one line you type plus the Hijri date line if you turn it on. To place an office logo or a company stamp, open the edit PDF tool, press the Picture button and pick a PNG with a transparent background, then drag it into place and resize it from the corner. The difference is that a logo goes on the page you choose, not on every page.
