What the page numbers tool does

The page numbers tool adds a number at the bottom of every page in a PDF, in the Arabic-Indic digits ١٢٣ that Arabic institutions ask for or in Western 123. You pick right, centre or left, start counting from any number, and can show the total as ١ / ١٠. You can also stamp today's date beside the number in the Hijri calendar by Umm al-Qura or in the Gregorian one. The numbers are real text in an embedded Arabic font, so they stay sharp in print and at any zoom.

Numbering runs inside your browser, so a thesis or a legal memo is never uploaded and never leaves your device.

When you need to number PDF pages

Master's and doctoral theses at Saudi universities are submitted numbered, and many faculties require Arabic-Indic digits in the Arabic version. Memos and pleadings filed through Najiz, meeting minutes and contracts with annexes are numbered so a page can be cited precisely. A file assembled from several sources with the merge tool comes out without a single numbering, and numbering it afterwards gives it one sequence.

The Hijri date stamp suits copies that must show when they were printed: a printed copy of a contract, or a report handed to a government office dated today by the Umm al-Qura calendar.

How to add page numbers to a PDF, step by step

  1. Open the page numbers page and drop the file into the tray, or pick it from your device.

  2. Choose where the number goes at the bottom of the page: right, centre or left, as the institution or the university guide asks.

  3. Choose the digit style: Arabic-Indic ١٢٣ for Arabic documents or Western 123, and decide whether to show the total as ١ / ١٠.

  4. Set the starting number if the file begins at a page other than the first, and choose a Hijri or Gregorian date stamp if you need one.

  5. Click the number pages button, download the file, and open it to check the position before printing or uploading.

Limits to know about

  • The number sits at the bottom of the page only, with a fixed print-safe margin. There is no option to place it at the top or change the margin.
  • Pages such as the cover or the contents cannot be excluded. To number from a given page, split the file with the split tool, number the part you need, then merge.
  • The available styles are Arabic-Indic and Western digits only. There is no lettering and no Roman numerals.
  • A password-protected file cannot be numbered directly. Unlock it first.
  • The number is drawn over the page content, so if the bottom of a page is full of text or a footer, the number can overlap it. Pick another position, or test on one page first.

Common problems and fixes

The numbers show as 123 instead of ١٢٣

Change the digit style option to Arabic-Indic ١٢٣ before running. The option applies to the number, the total and the date together.

I do not want the cover numbered

Split the file into the cover and the remaining pages with the split PDF tool, number the second part starting from 1 or 2 as the university guide says, then merge the cover in front with the merge tool.

The number overlaps text at the bottom of the page

Change the position from centre to right or left, where the bottom of the page is usually empty, or add a margin to the pages with the crop tool if they are full to the edge.

The Hijri date does not match the calendar I use

The stamp uses the Umm al-Qura calendar adopted in Saudi Arabia with today's date on your device. If the device date is wrong, the stamp is wrong, so check the date settings.

The file is password protected

Run it through the unlock PDF tool with the current password, number the unlocked file, then protect it again if you need to.

Frequently asked questions

How do I number PDF pages with Arabic-Indic digits ١٢٣?

Drop the file into the tray, set the digit style option to Arabic-Indic ١٢٣, choose the position and click number pages. The digits are written as real text in an embedded Arabic font, so they stay sharp in print, and the same choice applies to the total and the date stamp. It works on a phone with no app.

Can numbering start from a number other than 1?

Yes. Type the number you want in the start-from field, and the first page takes that number with the rest following. This helps when numbering one chapter of a thesis or an appendix that begins at page 45, or when numbering the remainder of a file after splitting off the cover and contents with the split tool.

Where does the number appear on the page?

At the bottom of the page with a fixed print-safe margin, and you choose right, centre or left. There is no option to place the number at the top. If the bottom of the page is full with a footer or text, pick the side that is usually empty, and open the result to check before printing or uploading.

Can today's date be stamped beside the number?

Yes, in the Hijri calendar by Umm al-Qura or in the Gregorian one, printed beside every page number in the digit style you chose. The date is today's date on your device at the time of the run, and it suits copies that must show when they were printed, such as a contract copy or a report handed to an official body.

How do I leave the cover or contents page unnumbered?

The tool numbers every page and excludes nothing. Split the file with the split PDF tool into the cover and contents on one side and the remaining pages on the other, number the second part starting from the number the university guide asks for, then merge the two parts in the right order with the merge tool.

Can the total be shown, like ١ / ١٠?

Yes. Switch on show the total and every number appears as the current page, a slash, then the page count of the file, in Arabic-Indic or Western digits as you chose. If you start counting from a number other than 1, the total is computed from the starting number so the format stays consistent.

Are my files uploaded when numbering?

No. Numbering runs entirely inside your browser; the Arabic font is embedded and the digits are drawn on your device, and the file is never sent to a server. That is why the tool is safe for university theses and legal memos before uploading them to Najiz or handing them in, and it works offline once the page has loaded.
