What the merge tool does

The merge tool takes two or more files, PDFs or pictures, and joins them into one document in the order you set, a picture becoming a page of its own. Every page is copied exactly as it is: text stays selectable, searchable text, a scanned page stays an image at its original quality, and nothing is recompressed, resized or rotated. Files of different page sizes stay that way too, so a full sheet and a smaller page sit in the same document at their own sizes, because merging never redraws a page and never squares page sizes up with each other. The result is an ordinary PDF that opens in any reader on a phone or a computer.

We measured the size of the result on files carrying embedded fonts and high resolution images: the merged file came out at roughly the sum of the files that went in. Merging neither compresses nor doubles anything, it carries every image and every font across as it is. All of that work happens inside your browser. The files are never uploaded to a server and never pass through Khallas, which is why merging is safe for contracts, bank statements and personal documents you would rather keep on your own device. Close the tab and nothing remains, because the file never left.

When you need to merge PDFs

Most organisations in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf ask for one attachment, not several. The Jadarat portal takes a single CV file, so certificates and experience letters have to go behind it. Financing and visa applications ask for three months of statements in one file. An Ejar rental contract arrives with its annexes in separate files, and monthly ZATCA invoices archive far better as one file per month.

Students bring a term of lecture notes together into one reference before an exam, and employees prepare a promotion file or a job application as a single document holding the cover letter, the certificates and the experience letters in the order the person reviewing them will read. Legal filings through Najiz attach the document and its evidence as one ordered file. What these have in common is that the order is part of the meaning: whoever opens the file expects the cover letter first and the supporting pages behind it, and the order you set in the list is the order that reaches them.

From dropping the files to your first merged document

Three steps stand between opening the page and your first merged file. Drop at least two files into the tray, drag them until the order of the list is the order you want the pages in, then press merge. The order in the result is the order of the list from top to bottom, and the pages inside each file keep their original order. The button needs two files: with one file it does nothing, and that is the most common reason it looks broken to somebody who tried it with a single file and left.

On a phone the files come from the Files app or from your downloads, and a WhatsApp attachment has to be saved into Files first and then picked from the tray. There is no app to install and no account to create, and a run takes seconds. Once the result card appears you can download the merged file, send it straight out from the share row below the result, or hand it to the next tool in one tap, compression or password protection for example, without dropping it again.

Merge a picture into a document without converting it first

Pictures go into the same tray as the PDFs, as JPG, PNG or WebP, and drag into place in the list like any other file, each one becoming a single page in the merged document. The format is read from the file's own bytes rather than from the end of its name, because a camera roll is full of files whose names do not match what is inside them, and a JPEG saved as .png merges here exactly as it is. This is the route for a job application or a visa file: a scanned contract and a photo of your ID in one attachment, with no trip through a conversion tool and back carrying an in-between file nobody wanted.

The page a picture lands on is not the picture's size, it is the document's. It is taken from the first page of the first PDF in the list, so a packet of certificates does not print with one page a different shape from the rest. The picture is centred with an even margin around it, at its own aspect ratio, never cropped or stretched, and a landscape photo gets that same sheet turned sideways so it fills the page. A list that is all pictures and no PDF gets A4. Word, Excel and PowerPoint files each still have their own conversion tool, and the result of that is what gets merged.

Take only the pages you want from each file

A file does not have to go in whole. Under the file list there is a section called pages from each file: open any file there and tap the pages you want taken from it, and the row shows how many pages you chose out of how many, with the total page count of the merged document above the list before you press anything. A file you never opened goes in with all of its pages, and the pages you chose go in in their own order inside the file. This replaces the old route, which was to merge everything, open the organize tool and delete what you did not want, with a file in the middle carrying pages of a bank statement nobody asked for.

If the file is long and you do not know its page numbers, type a word into the find in this file's text box above the thumbnails. The file's pages are read one after another, the pages holding that word are marked with how many times it appears on each and a sentence from the page itself around the match, and one press takes all of them. The search is written for Arabic as Arabic is actually typed: it looks past the diacritics and the tatweel, treats the alef's hamza forms as one letter, does the same for the final yaa and alef maqsura and for taa marbuta and haa, and accepts Arabic-Indic digits alongside Latin ones, so a word typed plainly finds the vocalised spelling of it on the page. If the file is a scan with no text layer the search finds nothing, and a note points you at the Arabic OCR tool to make the text first.

What survives the merge and what does not

Everything drawn on the page survives: the pages themselves, their text, their images, their size and their rotation. We measured what does not on a test file carrying a document title, an author name, bookmarks and a filled form field: after the merge there was no title, no author and no bookmark list, and the form field was no longer fillable even though the name typed into it still showed on the page exactly as before. The reason is that the tool copies pages, not documents, so anything attached to the document itself, the bookmarks, the document information and the interactive form, does not travel with a page.

Links inside pages are two different cases, and we measured both. A link that opens a web address still works after the merge. A link that jumps to another page inside the same document, a book's contents page pointing at its chapters for instance, is still drawn but no longer leads anywhere, because the page it pointed at is now a new page in a new document. For the same reason a digital signature no longer validates on a merged file. If the filled form is what matters, flatten it before merging so the answers become part of the page, and if the bookmarks matter, rebuild them with the bookmarks tool after merging.

How to merge PDF files step by step

Open the merge PDF page and drop two or more files into the tray, PDFs or pictures or a mix of both, or tap it to pick files from your device or from the Files app on a phone.

Limits worth knowing

The tool takes PDF files and pictures, as JPG, PNG or WebP. A picture becomes one page at the size of the document's pages; a Word or Excel file has to be converted with its own tool first, then the result merged.
A password protected file cannot be merged while it is locked, and you see a message saying it is protected. Unlock it first with the unlock tool if you know the password, and to protect the merged file itself use the protect tool afterwards.
We impose no limit on the number of files or pages, but the work runs on your device, so a batch adding up to hundreds of megabytes can be slow on an older phone. Split it into two runs when it is.
Bookmarks do not travel into the merged file, and neither does the document information such as the title and the author name. We measured this on a file carrying all of them and none survived the merge.
Interactive form fields stop being fillable after a merge, even though whatever was typed into them still shows on the page. If a filled form matters and must stay as it is, flatten it with the flatten tool before merging.
A link that opens a web address keeps working after the merge, while a link that jumps to another page inside the same document no longer leads anywhere, because its target page is now part of a new document.
A digitally signed file loses the validity of its signature when merged, because the result is a new document written from scratch. Merge a signed file when the point is reading or archiving, not when the signature is what has to be proven.

Common problems and fixes

I dropped a file and the merge button does nothing

Merging needs at least two files, so add another one. Pictures are welcome in the same list as PDFs; a Word or Excel file is the one that has to be converted with its own tool first, then merged.

The pages in the merged file are in the wrong order

The order of the result is the order of the list from top to bottom. Drag the files into place and press merge again. The order of pages inside a single file is not changed by merging; to change that, use the organize tool on the merged file.

I want two pages from a long file, not the whole thing

Open that file under pages from each file and tap the two pages, and the file goes in with only those, with the count shown beside its name. If you do not know where they are, type a word from them into the find in this file's text box.

The search in the file's text finds nothing

If the file is a scan its pages are images with no text, and the search cannot find what is not there. Run it through the Arabic OCR tool to make a text layer and try again. In text files, diacritics, tatweel and the shape of the hamza do not stop a word from being found.

The file is password protected

You see a message saying the file is protected. Use the unlock PDF tool with the correct password, then drop the unlocked file here. The message itself carries a route to that tool and takes your file with it.

The merged file is too big to send

Merging adds the sizes up and compresses nothing. Run the merged file through the compress PDF tool, choosing the light level for text documents or the strong one for scans, or use the compress to a size limit tool if a portal demands a specific size.

Arabic letters look broken or reversed in the merged file

Merging never touches the text, so if letters look broken they were already broken in the original file, or the reader you are using does not support the file's font. Open the result in another reader such as Chrome or Adobe Reader to check before sending it.

Are my files uploaded to a server when merging?

No. Merging runs entirely inside your browser with code that downloads to your device, and no file is sent to our servers or to any third party. You can check this by turning off the internet after the page loads and running the merge; it works as normal. That is why it is safe for bank statements, contracts and government documents.

Can I merge a password-protected PDF?

Not directly. An encrypted file refuses to open and you see a message that it is protected. If you know the password, run it through the unlock PDF tool first and merge the unlocked file. If you want the merged file itself to be protected, run it through the protect PDF tool afterwards with a new password.

Does the merged file lose quality or get bigger?

It does not lose quality, because pages are copied without any recompression. The size is roughly the sum of the files you merged, since every image and font is carried over as it is. If the result is over the limit for email or WhatsApp, use the compress PDF tool after merging to bring it down.
