What does the rotate PDF tool do?

The rotate tool turns the pages of a PDF by a quarter, a half or three quarters of a turn, either every page in the file or only the pages you name. It does not redraw a page or compress it. It writes into the file the direction each page should be displayed in, so text stays selectable and searchable, pictures keep their quality, and the result opens the right way up in any reader on a phone or a computer, and when it is printed.

All of it happens inside your browser: the file is not uploaded to a server and never passes through Khallas, which makes rotation safe for contracts, bank statements, medical reports and scanned IDs you would rather keep on your own device.

When you need to rotate PDF pages

Most often after scanning. An office scanner pulls the sheet in upside down and every page comes out inverted, or a contract photographed with a phone held at an angle is saved with its pages on their side. The result is a file everyone has to tilt their head to read, or an attachment a government portal rejects as unreadable.

It happens just as often in files that mix portrait and landscape pages: a wide financial table inside a report, a floor plan inside a quotation, or a landscape certificate in the middle of a job application. You do not want to turn the whole file, only a page or two, and that is what the page range is for. Before uploading a document to a portal such as Jadarat or Najiz, or sending it to someone who will print it, rotating it properly saves a rejection or a page printed sideways.

Which way does each angle turn the page?

The angle is measured clockwise, which is how the PDF specification itself defines rotation. 90 turns the page a quarter turn clockwise, which is what a page needs when the top of its text points to the left of the screen. 180 turns the page upside down, the angle for a scan that came out inverted. 270 is a quarter turn counter-clockwise, for a page whose text has its top pointing to the right.

Rotation is added to the page's current direction rather than replacing it, so a page already turned 90 degrees and turned 90 more ends up at 180. If you pick the wrong angle you do not have to go back to the original: drop the result in again and finish the turn, since four quarter turns bring a page back to where it started.

Rotating only some pages with the page range

Leave the page range box empty to rotate every page. To rotate particular pages, type their numbers: 2 for a single page, 2-4 for a run, 1-3,7 for a run plus a separate page, and 5- for every page from the fifth to the end of the file. A range that runs past the last page stops at the last page, and one that starts after it is refused with a message that the range is invalid. The box also takes Arabic-Indic digits, the Arabic comma, and the long dash a phone's autocorrect likes to put in place of a hyphen.

Every page in the range turns by the same angle in one run. If different pages need different angles, rotate the first group, drop the resulting file back in and rotate the second group by its own angle. How to rotate PDF pages, step by step

Limits worth knowing

The tool does not find sideways pages by itself. You choose the angle and the pages, so look through the file before running it to see which pages need turning.
One angle applies to every selected page in a run. Pages that need different angles take more than one run, or can be turned one at a time in the organize pages tool.
Rotation works in quarter turns only. A scan tilted by a few degrees, rather than lying on its side, is not fixed by rotating; the clean up scan tool is the one that straightens a slight tilt.
Rotation does not change the size of the sheet: an A3 page stays A3 and a long receipt keeps its length, and only the direction it is displayed in changes. To make pages of different sizes match, use the unify page sizes tool.
One run takes up to 3 files, all turned by the same angle and the same page range. The ceiling is technical rather than commercial, because each file is read and written inside your own browser.
If the range starts after the last page of one file in a batch, the whole run stops with a message that the range is invalid. Leave the range empty when you mix files of different lengths, or run each file on its own.
A password-protected file cannot be opened until its password is removed, and a digitally signed file loses the validity of its signature after any change to the file, which rotation is.

Common problems and their fixes

The page turned the wrong way

Drop the resulting file in again and finish the turn: if you picked 90 and needed 270, rotate the result by 180. Rotation adds to the current direction, so there is no need to start again from the original.

Every page turned but I only wanted one

The page range box was empty, and an empty box means every page. Start again from the original file and type the number of the sideways page alone in the page range box.

It says the page range is invalid

Separate numbers with commas and runs with a hyphen, such as 1-3,5, with no words or full stops. The message also appears when the range starts after the last page of the file, or when its first number is larger than its last.

I rotated the page in my PDF reader but it is sideways again

The rotate button in many readers only turns the view on your screen and does not save it into the file, so the page is sideways again when the file is reopened or sent. Rotation here is written into the file itself, so it holds in every reader and for everyone you send the file to.

It says the file is password protected

The message carries a link to the unlock PDF tool that takes your file with it. Enter the password there, then drop the unlocked copy back in here and rotate it.

The scanned page is slightly tilted, not on its side
