What does the PDF to images tool do?

This tool draws every page of a PDF the way a PDF reader draws it on screen, then saves that drawing as a JPG or PNG image. You get one image per page, named after your original file and the page number: a single image downloads on its own, and several download together as a ZIP.

The drawing and the saving both happen inside your browser, with a PDF engine running on your own device, so the file is not uploaded and the images are not sent to any server. That makes the tool fine for a page of a contract, an ID or a payslip that you want to send as a picture without the document passing through a third party.

When you need to turn PDF pages into images

Some fields on portals and in apps take a picture and refuse a PDF: the personal photo, the ID copy or the certificate image on an online form. In that case you convert just the page that is asked for into a JPG and upload it. The same goes for sharing: a picture of a page shows straight away in a WhatsApp chat or a post, while a PDF arrives as an attachment somebody has to open.

You also need it to put a page inside a presentation or a Word document, where a picture drops in as it is with no reader involved, to make a thumbnail of a brochure or report cover for a website, or when a teacher or a colleague asks for one page of a long file to look at on their phone without downloading the whole thing.

JPG or PNG, normal or high?

JPG saves the image with compression that gives up a small amount of detail, at 90 percent quality, so the file comes out far smaller. It is the better choice for scanned pages, pages with photographs, and any upload field with a size limit. PNG gives up no detail, so the edges of letters, thin lines and table rules stay sharp, but the file is usually larger, and it suits text pages and diagrams. The background is white in both formats, so a PNG does not come out transparent.

Normal quality draws the page at 108 pixels per inch, so an A4 page becomes an image about 893 pixels wide and 1263 pixels tall, which is enough for reading on a screen and for sharing. High quality draws it at twice that, 216 pixels per inch, so an A4 page comes out about 1786 pixels wide and 2526 tall, the one to pick for printing, zooming in or reading small type. A high quality image holds four times as many pixels as a normal one.

What survives in the image and what does not?

The image is a snapshot of the page as it is displayed: text, Arabic lettering, tables, stamps, drawn signatures and colours are all drawn the way the reader shows them, and a rotated page comes out in the direction it is displayed in. But the text in the image is no longer text: it cannot be selected, copied or searched, and links do not work.

Limits worth knowing

An image carries no selectable or searchable text, and links on the page do not work in it.
There are two quality settings only, normal and high. You cannot set a pixel size or a resolution of your own, or ask for an image of a given size in kilobytes.
There are two formats only, JPG and PNG. Images do not come out as WebP or TIFF, and a PNG does not come out with a transparent background.
Every page becomes its own image, so several pages are not joined into one image and part of a page is not cut out. To put several pages in one image, place them on one sheet with the pages per sheet tool first, and to keep only part of a page, trim it with the crop margins tool before converting.
One run takes up to 3 PDF files, and the images from all of them download together in one ZIP, each image name starting with its own file's name. The ceiling is technical rather than commercial, because every page is drawn inside your own browser.
A long file at high quality means many large images drawn one after another on your device, which can slow an older phone, so convert only the pages you need. Very large pages such as engineering drawings and posters may fail to draw at high quality on a phone, so use normal quality for those.
A password-protected file cannot have its pages drawn until its password is removed with the unlock PDF tool.

Common problems and their fixes

I got a ZIP file instead of images

That is by design when more than one image comes out: the tool packs them into one file rather than a string of separate downloads. Open the ZIP from the Files app on a phone or by double-clicking on a computer, or type a single page number in the page range to download that page's image directly.

The image is too large for the upload field

Pick JPG and normal quality, which is the smallest image this tool makes. If it is still over the limit, the page is heavy with detail, like a colour scan; try turning the file grey first with the black and white tool, since a grey page usually comes out as a smaller JPG.

The text is blurry when I zoom in

Normal quality is designed for viewing at screen size. Convert again at high quality, which draws the page at twice the resolution in each direction, and pick PNG if the page is fine text or a table with thin lines.

I cannot copy the text from the image

The image is a drawing of the page, not text. To copy the text, run the extract text tool on the original PDF itself, as long as it is a text PDF rather than a scan, and it gives you the text with its Arabic intact.

I want a PNG with a transparent background

The tool draws the page on a white background, as a reader shows it, so the image does not come out transparent. If what you want is a logo or a stamp stored inside the file, try the extract images tool, which pulls out the pictures embedded in the file at their original resolution.

Some pages were not converted

Look at the page range box: if it holds a number or a range, only those pages are converted. Clear the box to convert every page.
