Why WhatsApp in particular
Most documents in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf now move over WhatsApp rather than email, and the practical difference is that forwarding here is far easier and far less deliberate: one tap moves your contract or your bank statement into a chat whose members you do not know. Auto save to the gallery and downloads means a copy of your file lives on a device you do not control. A password protected file passes through all of that and stays closed to anyone without the password.
Do not send the password in the same chat
This is the rule people waste most often. Sending the file and then posting the password right underneath it cancels the protection completely, because forwarding both messages together costs nothing. Send the password through another channel: a call, an SMS, or simply say it out loud. If the recipient is someone you deal with often, agree on a standing rule between you rather than inventing a new password each time, and never make it something guessable like an ID number or the date on the contract.
What the protection is, and where it stops
The file is encrypted with AES-128, the level every PDF reader on phones and desktops opens without extra software, which matters practically because a file the recipient cannot open helps nobody. Be clear with yourself about the limit though: a password controls who can open the file, and does nothing to stop someone who can open it from forwarding it or taking a screenshot. If what you want is for the document to declare its status to whoever reads it, that is the job of a watermark, and the two combine well.
